Lost in the Sound

I imagine that you’ll look like a painting within a painting
Underneath the hazy lights at some prom
I close my eyes and see you swaying as though the music was still playing
But the rest of the crowd is long gone
If your fathers tattoos and your mothers abandoned causes
Are the best things they have to pass on
Well then this might seem dramatic, but it cuts through the static
And so the penitent wrote you a song
And said:
I don’t need that fantasy
It don’t mean that much to me
I don’t need a thing
We’re lost in the sound
Lost in the sound
I imagine that you’ll feel like a tragedy in training
Falling into folds between folds
With everything closed except for two lanes to jersey
The desperation tries to take hold
And just like the novels bore us in high school
Forced upon our sleep-deprived souls
We all become characters that we can’t relate to
And then we just practice crowd control
I don’t need that fantasy
It don’t mean that much to me
I don’t need a thing
We’re lost in the sound
Lost in the sound
You’ll see floods on both sides of this river so I won’t count you out when counting all the floods that we have seen
I’ve seen blood flowing like a river
I’ve made mistakes
Will I be forgiven?

Inside your head
There's something precise
Something we became
A moment in time
It finds you
Takes you by the hand
Dismantles all you've made
And then it dissipates
God bless the stereo
It keeps me awake on this drive
Reduced to darkness and light
Until we're dust on a hinge
The ghost of a grin
And this night feels as long as a life
And I know
We'll find somewhere to go
Someplace to call a home
If it's the last thing we ever know
Whisper up to my window
And tell me what to dream about
And how it feels to chase the sun and let it get away
And please remind me
To breathe in deeply and embrace
A different kind of day
Perhaps we'll get our way

I'll wait for you
Will you wait for me?
It's different when you know
But I know you'll never know
I can see it in your ways
Time waster
Won't you waste some time with me?
Make me feel something
Before I have to leave
Time waster
Try to see the things I see
If you woke up and saw it
How long would you lay there
And pretend that it's not real?
Because it’s different when you know
And I pray you’ll never know
Because we know you don’t deserve that

Middlegrounders

We never really saw our fathers sleep
Even when we were kids
You said you never saw you shadow weeping
Even though I'm pretty sure that when you did it did
We're just portraits of modern saints
As fragile as model planes
And still, we never saw our fathers sleep
We’re never going to see our fathers sleep
So, middlegrounders, where do we go from here,
When the middle ground has all but disappeared?
And the outsiders all lament that the outside that they know
Has washed away, and even the inside has started to erode
Where can we go?
Where have our shadows gone now that the streetlights turned away?
No survival skills; we'd rather drown than have to work to breathe
What will our mothers sigh about now that we're finally getting sleep?
Voices lowered to a whisper
You repeat to me
With insincere sincerity
Pain is like a seed—when it's buried near a body of water, you'll eventually find a city
Middlegrounders, where do we go from here?
Look what we've forgotten
Look what we've abandoned
